R.I.P Robin Mawer

It is with sadness that I share the passing of my father, Robin Mawer.

Dad died peacefully in hospital on St Mary's in the very early hours of Wednesday morning.

I know many of you would know him from the sunset pictures he liked to post.  He was always very pleased, and a little surprised, by how much they were appreciated.

Dad was a true Scillonian who lived in the house he was born in for nearly all of his life, inheriting the family farm.  He grew up boating and had his own sailing boat from an early age.  I have many fond memories of sailing to off islands for family picnics on a Sunday and later just going sailing with him.  Changes to his health led him to give up sailing.  He became interested in birdwatching which soon became quite an obsession.  When I came home to Scilly there were often trips out to see some unusual bird.

Dad was so pleased, as are all of the family, that he was able to end his days in his beloved islands and we are so grateful for the wonderful care he, and we, were given by all the staff at the hospital.

I never met Robin and it's been a few years now since I last visited Scilly but his images I've viewed daily always evoked fond memories. My sympathy goes to all in his family.
