Gugh viewed from inside the DEL (Defensive Electric Light) building at
Woolpack. As I understand it, a pair of these DEL's would shine a
spotlight each on the intended target and, by the angle that they
converged at, they gave the range for the big guns at Woolpack and
Steval - in a similar way to the spotlights fitted to the Lancaster
bombers in the 'Dam Busters'. There were two pairs of DEL's, one pair
at Woolpack and another at Steval, powered by a generator station
situated midway between them, with an underground fuel tank in the
next redan along. They date from the turn of the 19th - 20th century
and never fired a shot in anger.

How many times have I looked at these buildings and wondered what exactly they were! Thanks for the enlightenment. Should really get back to work now but this site is addictive!!
