The 16th century windmill ( one of two ) stood here on the highest point of the Garrison until it was rebuilt as a gun tower in 1834. It was converted in the 1870s to a signal station bought by Lloyds in 1872. It was an Admiralty Signal Station during WW 1 and had a Bofors gun mounted on it in WW 2 which was probably when the parapet was built to replace the conical roof.
For the TODAY photo I had to be about 100 feet to the right to see any of the tower which otherwise would have been totally hidden by large trees and more recent buildings.......Robin Mawer
