. OLD & NEW

Old & New. An old view of  Hugh Town from Church Street to Porthcressa taken from Hugh House in the 1870s. It was before the Town Hall and the old Lifeboat house ( Now the Library ) were built and the only recognisable houses still there are Menawethan centre of photo and Penlee and Bell Rock ( formally ) Fernleigh in the top left on Church Street. The circular building in the centre in front of Menawethan is a Lime Kiln which was just below where the present day steps are.  Parsons Field is in the right foreground. The "New" shows how much of Porthcressa bank has been reclaimed with the TIC where the boatsheds were.....Robin Mawer
